Better than Maplesirupisabitch (Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu.) or horemya (with the bitchy female MC).

Move along people... Nothing to see here today. :(

I love this series but this was the worst episode ever. The story of two background characters is just a complete waste of my time. Not even the fucking king of mountain fight (3km to finish) these guys could finish in 20 minutes.

Folks skip to the last scene and wait another week

Background story is fine but it just that this season had way too many talking scene compared to before

Giovanni • 1 year ago

You're right, it makes no sense😭 Not only are they background characters but they're third years as well.. which means we're not gonna see them racing anymore after this inter high🙂 It's a total waste of time.. I get it.. you want to be unpredictable with your writing but background characters? To win the interhigh?😭 I'm praying that something happens which prevents them from moving any further.. he had so much screen time and yet they still tryna give him more, for what?😭

There are plenty of great works with great characters that use no flashbacks whatsoever. When you meet someone in real life, do you ask for a flashback in order to decide if they are interesting or not? Flashbacks are useless to define characters. What define characters is their present words and actions, as is the case in real life. Flashbacks detail unic moments that are meant to illustrate who the character is. But this is a mistake. It is the easy way out for poor writers who suck at writing dialogues. Plus, there is the massive inconvenient of linking events of the past and personality traits. Something that formulaic doesn't exist. This is the Naruto syndrom where the author tries to explain war by adding formulaic logic to formulaic events and formulaic train of thoughts. People are all but formulaic. Simply because a character suffered in the past doesn't tell much about who he is in the present. Some people become dispassionate because of suffering. Some become depressed and commit suicide. Others develop wisdom and empathy. Others become random people like any other. Single events can never define who a person becomes later on. Even trauma have a limited influence on personality.

And detailing scenes of a past relationship between two characters as is the case here only disturbs the pacing and brings absolutely nothing to the series. This doesn't tell us anything we couldn't have understood with properly written dialogues showcasing the present alchemy between the two. But we have this flashback here because, again, the author sucks at writing. Period.

You can disagree with me and it would be perfectly fine. I don't care one bit about being right or having you agree with me. But the bottom line is: what you wrote is an objective nonsense. Being interested in characters is not the same as being interested in these flashbacks.

Good answer. Thank you. Upvoted, even i don't completely agree.

Past and environement, and culture, and family... All this, people don't decide upon. These are determinisms. We could have an interesting exchange over what amount of one's existence is decided before one is even born, but most people don't care, and i don't want to annoy you. I may say 95%. Someone else may say 5%. We would both be wrong and both be right at the same time, because it can't be proven. Which makes the question interesting to me. But still, by 'what defines a character', i didn't mean what 'determines a character'. I was merely alluding at how one gets to know someone else. It was more surface level. If you are a viewer, in order to understand a character, i believe the real life approach is the one that would tell you the most: it is about people's words and actions. This is my own understanding and it can't be proven. But flasbacks have many drawbacks, and in my opinion, only tell a particular situation at a particular moment that won't be relevant with 95% of present situations (the number is arbitrary, as are the 5% and the 95% above). This is why i say that present words and behavior is what would tell you the most about someone. Because determinisms force people to evolve even despite experience. Unless you live in a culture where people put facades on, like Japan. But honestly, i would struggle to live in such a country. I suck at plenty of things and i am afraid i am no good at handling people and cultures that prevent me from having genuine interactions. In this case, i am too ignorant to say anything relevant. But hey, again, nothing can be proven, meaning that is not one absolute truth on the matter and so, that is probably ok.
